Our shrubland ecosystems deserve just as much protection as forest. Shrublands are characterized by the dominance of shrubs in their ecosystem often sure to dry or other harsh conditions that do not support larger plant life. Even though shrublands, otherwise known as scrub, may not look as grand as something like the Redwoods they are absolutely vital to the biodiversity that exists on this planet.

I made this print after a plan almost went through in my first home state of Florida that would have developed scrublands in over ninec state parks. Due to pushback from the public the plan was put on hold but could come back at any moment.

Here in my new home of Los Angeles there are several development projects that groups are fighting in order to protect our scrub known as Chaparral.

My goal was to donate a bit of each sale to organizations fighting to save scrublands in both Florida and California... but after ten days of seeing the catastrophic results of Hurricane Helene and with Milton on it's way with another potential direct hit to the same coast of Florida already in need of help I'll be donating all profits from sales of these posters.

The devastation of Hurricane Helene is heartbreaking and at the same time the work of groups fighting for our environment is as important as ever. Native ecosystems reduce the negative impacts these storms can have by absorbing flood waters and keeping storm surges at bay. We must work to restore the damage overdevelopment has done and to save what native habitat we have left.

I will split the profit from each sale and donate half to a group fighting to preserve or restore habitat and half will go to grassroots efforts working to alleviate the immense and immediate human needs from these storms.

More about the art- In 2021 I hiked the Ocala National Forest section of the Florida Trail, known as "the big scrub" and was surprised to see so many similarities with our own shrublands on the West Coast. Although these plants are not related the many demands of surviving in dry and hot climates that are fire dependent means that plants and animals develop many similar adaptations.

At the same time the very unique conditions of scrub habitat means that there is a high amount of endemism in both Florida Scrub and the Chaparral of the West.

I am inspired by the hardiness of the plants, their unique attributes, and that, despite my two homes feeling so torn apart by political divisiveness, I can find some common ground in the plants and animals there.
